PBS Books

What could I not resist from Paperback Swap this week?

More short stories from one of my favorites.

Honestly, I loved the title. I've never read anything by this author.

Another one I picked because I liked the title. I know they are both still mysteries, but at least I'm expanding my author horizons, right?

~Review~ Blueberry Muffin Murder by Joanne Fluke

What and Who: Blueberry Muffin Murder by Joanne Fluke; Hardcover Edition; ISBN 9781575667072

What it's about: Preparations are underway for Lake Eden, Minnesota's annual Winter Carnival - and Hannah Swensen is set to bake up a storm at her popular shop, The Cookie Jar. Too bad the honour of creating the official Winter Carnival cake went to famous lifestyle maven Connie Mac - a half-baked idea, in Hannah's opinion. She suspects Connie Mac is a lot like the confections she whips up on her cable TV cooking show - sweet, light, and scrumptious-looking, but likely to leave a bitter taste in your mouth.Hannah's suspicions are confirmed when Connie Mac's limo rolls into town. Turns out America's 'cooking sweetheart' is a bossy, bad-tempered, and downright domineering. Things finally boil over when Hannah arrives at The Cookie Jar to find the Winter Carnival cake burnt to a crisp - and Connie Mac lying dead in her pantry, struck down while eating one of Hannah's famous blueberry muffins.Next thing Hannah knows, the police have declared The Cookie Jar's kitchen crime scene off-limits. She's a baker without an oven - and the Carnival is right around the corner. Hannah's only alternative is to cook up a plan to save her business - by finding the killer herself. (goodreads)

What I thought: I really like this series. This one was a little harder to figure out who the killer was and I enjoyed that. Plus there was so much other fun stuff going on that it made the book a very fun read. Bonus for me - there's actually a recipe in here that my husband is willing to try out! I've wanted to try all the recipes because they just sound so good. If you are looking for a fun cozy this is a good choice!

How I rate it: I really liked it - so a 4.5.

Where I got it: my favorite place - the library

~Review~ Missing Marlene by Evan Marshall

I'm sure there are rules about photographing stuff
I don't know those rules!
Who and What - Missing Marlene by Evan Marshall; Hardcover Edition; ISBN 9781575664200

What it's about - This delightful new series introduces Jane Stuart, a widowed young mother and literary agent, and Winky, her tortoiseshell cat who has a nose for trouble.
The last thing a working mom like Jane needs is a call from her young son's school saying Marlene, his nanny, never arrived to pick him up. It looks as if the pretty nineteen-year-old has left without giving notice, and no one seems to know where she's gone. Could the young nanny have met with foul play?
Juggling book deals, rival agents, and a rocky romance with a handsome author, Jane begins to uncover Marlene's shocking secret life. As she discovers more evidence that Marlene's innocence died long ago, Winky has a critical clue that could reveal if a killer came in on little cat feet...and if that same killer is getting ready to strike again. (goodreads)

What I thought about it - OK first it was published in 1999 - so it's not exactly new, but it was an entertaining read. I read the very last one in this series first (because I liked the cover) and I liked it, so I thought I'd just read the rest, from the beginning, like a normal person. The only thing that really bothers me is Jane really guilt trips herself the whole time. But other than that I liked it. Oh and I'm a nut for alliteration so I love that all the titles, the last one I read was Crushing Crystal. They're all like that!

How I rate it - a 4; I liked it.

Where I got it - This was the first book I requested from Paperback Swap.

~Audiobook Review~ Caught by Harlan Coben

Who and What: Caught by Harlan Coben; Audiobook Version; ISBN: 9780739385203; Narrated by Carrington MacDuffie

What it's about: 17-year-old Haley McWaid is a good girl, the pride of her suburban New Jersey family, captain of the lacrosse team, headed off to college next year with all the hopes and dreams her doting parents can pin on her. Which is why, when her mother wakes one morning to find that Haley never came home the night before, and three months quickly pass without word from the girl, the community assumes the worst.

Wendy Tynes is a reporter on a mission, to identify and bring down sexual predators via elaborate-and nationally televised-sting operations. Working with local police on her news program Caught in the Act, Wendy and her team have publicly shamed dozens of men by the time she encounters her latest target. Dan Mercer is a social worker known as a friend to troubled teens, but his story soon becomes more complicated than Wendy could have imagined.

In a novel that challenges as much as it thrills, filled with the astonishing tension and unseen suburban machinations that have become Coben's trademark, Caught tells the story of a missing girl, the community stunned by her loss, the predator who may have taken her, and the reporter who suddenly realizes she can't trust her own instincts about this story-or the motives of the people around her. (goodreads)

What I think: This is my first Coben novel and if all his books are as good as this one it definitely won't be my last. So many twists and turns that when you think you've got it figured out, you realize you don't. The ending was something I know I didn't see coming. Carrington MacDuffie did a superb job narrating. That's another thing I found completely enjoyable. The recording was as long as some of the other audiobooks I've listened to but I didn't find myself tuning out at all.

How I rate it: A 4.5 (someplace between liked and loved)

Where I got it: The library

Library Thursday

Time for Library Thursday with Lazy Girl Reads.

A fun little hop where you share the library books you've checked out during the past week or share pictures of a library if you didn't actually check anything out.

There's no doubt I love my library. I'm there two or three times a week. There has to be a 12 step program for people addicted to checking out library books. "Hi I'm Kris and I'm a book a holic". "Hi Kris"

Anyway, I tried to control myself this week and failed. Here's what I ended up checking out:

I really liked the cover on this
the name intrigued me too
plus I had watched a whole weekend
of Harry Potter, so I figured a book
about witches would be cool

Because I have to have at
least one Laura Levine checked
out at all times. Just in case I have
something else I hate!

A mystery with a ghost yeah, well, I
couldn't exactly pass that one up
now could I?

Includes recipes and
coffee making tips
AND
it's a cozy - really -
did you think I could resist?

~Review~ Heaven in High Gear by Joan Brady

What and Who: Heaven in High Gear by Joan Brady, Hardcover Edition, ISBN 9780671007720

What it's about: Brady's follow-up to her bestselling "God on a Harley" picks up where that entertaining first novel left off--in a raucous New Jersey bar, where heroine Heather Hurley's life is about to change radically. (goodreads)

What I thought about it: It wasn't bad. What it was is weird. I'm not bashing God or anything - don't get me wrong here - but the way it was written was kind of creepy. The author made it sound like Heather was physically attracted to God, which is just wrong to me. Also, as is usual with any evangelical type writing, I could have done without the bashing of the Catholic Church. We are Christians who believe in God too - I wish people would quit making it sound like that's not true. It's annoying and frustrating.

What I give it: Normally any book I finish in a day would be a 4 or 5, but I just can't get around the weirdness of the physical attraction thing and the bashing of the Church. While I didn't exactly hate it, it was less than a "just a ok" so a 2.5.

W... W... W... Wednesdays

MizB at Should be Reading hosts this short but sweet meme every Wednesday. No fancy pictures today - I'm between appointments so I'm just blasting this out!

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you'll read next?

Currently I'm reading Heaven in High Gear by Joan Brady. It was a random pick at the library. The jury's still out - I'll have to let you know when I finish it.

I recently finished reading Apple Turnover Murder by Joanne Fluke. I love the town she created and the characters. She's my second favorite cozy author.

Next I will either read The Emperor's Tomb by Steve Berry (I know, I said that last week but I got distracted!) or Yankee Doodle Dead by Caroline Hart.

~Review~ Apple Turnover Murder by Joanne Fluke

What and Who: Apple Turnover Murder by Joanne Fluke; Hardcover Edition; ISBN 978-0-7582-3489-6

What it's about: It's June in Lake Eden, Minnesota, and for Hannah Swensen, that means bridal showers galore, plus a massive fundraising event in need of confections—not to mention a killer who never learned that charity begins at home...

Early summer brings plenty of work for Hannah, even before Mayor Bascomb's wife drops by The Cookie Jar to place an order ...for eleven-hundred cookies! Stephanie Bascomb is organizing an elaborate three-day event to support local charities, and though it's a worthy cause, Hannah almost flips when her business partner, Lisa, suggests setting up an apple turnover stand. Hannah's never made a turnover—but, pushover that she is, she places her faith in Lisa's mother-in-law's recipe and agrees to be a magician's assistant in the fundraiser's talent show...

Dozens of pastries and one hideous purple dress later, Hannah has to admit that stepping out of her comfort zone has been fun as well as profitable. The only snag is the show's host, community college professor Bradford Ramsey. Hannah and her younger sister Michelle each had unfortunate romantic relationships with Ramsey, and when the cad comes sniffing around between acts, Hannah tells him off. But when the curtain doesn't go up, she discovers Ramsey backstage—dead as a doornail with a turnover in his hand...

Now, to protect her reputation and Michelle's, Hannah must get to the bottom of the professor's bitter end. There are plenty of scorned suspects, including an ex-wife who feels cheated in more ways than one, and a prominent local who may have been using Ramsey to avenge her own randy spouse. But who was unstable enough to snuff out Professor Love? A killer who's flakier than puffpastry—and far more dangerous... (goodreads)

What I think: I want to live in Lake Eden Minnesota! I love the characters in these books. I have to say I didn't see it coming this time either. I love that! I thought it wouldn't matter if I read these out of order, but apparently it does to some degree. There were some subjects brought up from previous books that it would have been nice to know what they were talking about. Not completely necessary to the reading overall though. The recipes sound so good too. Too bad I'm the only one who eats sweets in this house or I'd be trying out all the recipes!

How I rate it: I'm going to give it a 5 - I finished it in under 12 hours - that must mean I loved it enough to not want to put it down.

Where I got it: My library (of course). You all know how much I {heart} my library.

PBS Books

This week from PBS I got the following books.

*GASP* A cozy? Say it ain't so! Well, yeah, it is. The Savannah Reid series is what got me started on cozies!

Like a broken record here, huh? Another Leslie Meier!

Promise, this is the last Leslie Meier for the week. That's because I have all of them now, except for the ever elusive Back to School Murder which I can't seem to find. The hunt is still most definitely on though!

You know you're impressed - it's not a cozy! A collection of stories by one of my favorite authors? Well, you can't go wrong with that now can ya?

~Review~ 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover by Linda Wisdom

What and Who: 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover by Linda Wisdom, eBook format, ISBN 9781402215551

It's about: Jazz can't decide whether to scorch him with a fireball or jump into bed with him

Jasmine Tremaine, a witch who can't stay out of trouble Nikolai Gregorivich, a drop-dead gorgeous vampire cop on the trail of a serial killer.

The sizzling love affair between Jazz and Nick has been off-again, on-again for about 300 years. Mostly off, lately. But now Nick needs Jazz's help, and while Jazz and Nick try to figure out their own hearts and resist their ever-increasing attraction, they must steer clear of a maniacal killer with super-supernatural powers. They are surrounded by a hilarious cast of oddball paranormal characters, including Norma, the chain-smoking ghost who haunts Jazz's sports car, Dweezil, her ghoul of a boss, and Fluff and Puff, a pair of bunny slippers with sharp teeth and short tempers (watch your ankles)! (goodreads)

What I think: I really liked this book. The characters were quirky enough to be real, but not over the top. A great mixture of ghosts, vamps, witches, and regular ol' humans (no werewolves here!). Some fighting, some loving, and demon beat down. Yeah, this was a pretty darn good book.

What I give it: A 4.5 yes, maybe I do need to redo my rating system to add a somewhere between 'liked' and 'loved'.

Where I got it: This was a free download for my Kobo.

~Dead as a Doornail~ by Charlaine Harris

What and Who: Dead as a Doornail by Charlaine Harris, hardcover edition, ISBN 9780441012794

What it's about: When she is not waitressing or preoccupied with her own amorous adventures, telepath Sookie Stackhouse is tracking down a serial killer of shapeshifters. Her sleuthing is partly altruistic, but she's also trying to save her were-panther brother, Jason, who has become the chief suspect in the crime.

Sookie's got just a month, before the next full moon, to find out who wants her brother dead - and to stop the fiend! Sookie Stackhouse enjoys her life, mostly. She's a great cocktail waitress in a fun bar; she has a love life, albeit a bit complicated, and most people have come to terms with her telepathy. The problem is, Sookie wants a quiet life - but things just seem to happen to her and her friends. Now her brother Jason's eyes are starting to change: he's about to turn into a were-panther for the first time. She can deal with that, but her normal sisterly concern turns to cold fear when a sniper sets his deadly sights on the local changeling population. She afraid not just because Jason's at risk, but because his new were-brethren suspect Jason may be the shooter. Sookie has until the next full moon to find out who's behind the attacks - unless the killer decides to find her first. (goodreads)

What I thought: This is the second time I've picked up this book to read it. At least I finished it this time. It doesn't seem as good to me as the other Southern Vampire books - too much going on that's more weird than ever.

How I rate it: Sorry all my friends who love Sookie - for me it was just o.k. so I give a 3.

Where I got it: I checked it out from the Wesmark Branch of the library.

~Book Review~ Zapped by Carol Higgins Clark

Who and What?  Zapped by Carol Higgins Clark. Hardcover edition. ISBN 978-1-4165-6215-3

What it's about: Sleuth Regan Reilly and her husband, Jack, return to New York from their honeymoon in Ireland and discover that their next-door neighbor has put up his apartment for sale. They decide to buy it and enlarge the loft Jack lived in as a bachelor.

Regan takes time off from her work as a Private Investigator to supervise the construction, while Jack resumes his job as head of the Manhattan Major Case Squad.

On a sweltering summer night, a major blackout hits New York City and more than one person in the Reilly's building blows their fuse! In the midst of the chaos, with Jack out coping with the city's problems, Regan finds herself drawn into a case she would never expect to happen in her own home.

Zapped, set in New York City, blends Clark's sophisticated humor with her remarkable gift for portraying characters in different walks of life. Here, she creates a penetrating, humorous profile of bosses and workers in the New York real estate and construction business and the ardors of renovating a home, which we all know can drive one crazy. (goodreads)

What I thought about it: This was my first Carol Higgins Clark novel. I'm a huge fan of Mary Higgins Clark and have read most of her books - so I decided to give it a try. At first I wasn't sure, but the more I read the more I got into it. I loved how all the different characters, from all over the city, ended up coming together in some way. I found all the characters to be quite believable.

How I rate it: I give it a four.

Where I got it: I checked it out from the Sumter County Main Library

What did I get from Paperback Swap this week?

Mail Order Murder by Leslie Meier - I believe this is now called Mistletoe Murder. But I went with the original one! Hardcover natch - you know how much I actually detest paperbacks!

Foul Play by Janet Evanovich - I don't know anything about this book. It says 'Originally published under the name Steffie Hall'. It seems like it might be a cozy. At any rate it's the audiobook.

Death Du Jour by Kathy Reichs - The second Temperance Brennan novel. I couldn't find this anywhere in my library system so here it is. I love Kathy Reichs and since I've read a lot of the later novels in this series I figured it was time to see how it all began!

Another Leslie Meier offering. I'm addicted to her - what can I say?

And another Leslie Meier. I have a couple more on the way, but I can't get my hands on one of them. I hope I can hunt it down eventually!

~This Pen for Hire~ by Laura Levine

What and who? This Pen for Hire by Laura Levine

How I got it: I checked it out from the library

What it's about: Jaine Austen is a hip, jack-of-all-trades writer who spends her days penning steamy personal ads. No one needs her help more than geeky Howard Murdoch, whom Jaine successfully sets up on a date. All goes well until Valentine's Day, when Howard finds his new love has been bludgeoned to death. (from goodreads)

What did I think? I love the way Laura Levine writes. Jaine is a real person (well, you can imagine that she is). This is the first book in the Jaine Austen Mystery series, and the second one I've read. I've not been disappointed either time. I discovered her by chance when I checked out an audiobook that had a Christmas mystery on it. Sometimes it's good to try new things! I now have a new cozy author to love and let's face it - I love my cozies!

How am I rating it? I'm rating it a 4.5 - which falls someplace between liked it and loved it!

~How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire~ by Kerrelyn Sparks

How I got it: I got this as a free download for my Kobo. I downloaded it a while ago - but I'm such a library whore I just got around to reading it.

What surprised me the most: It was a flat out romance. With vampires, of course. I honestly can't remember when I last read a romance book. Maybe 20 years ago? I used to read Janet Dailey religiously, then I started reading horror, thriller, and the like.

What I thought about it: Actually, I liked it. Once I got past the whole 'romance' thing. It even made me wonder if I should give some other romance books a shot. I thought it was well written and the silly arguments were about things a little more substantial in this book than the usual "I'm woman hear me roar" kind of thing. It's also the first in a series (Love at Stake) so it makes me wonder if the same characters will show up again? I liked Shanna a lot but found Roman was a little depressing - I guess I'll let it slide since he's a vampire.

I'm giving it a 4 - I liked it

Shakespeare's Landlord by Charlaine Harris

I know all of you recognize Charlaine Harris from the Sookie Stackhouse series. Here is another one of hers that I think you'll like.

Lily Bard settled in Shakespeare Arkansas after a brutal past. She's the towns cleaning lady and likes her job. When she sees a body get dumped right across the street from her house things start to change. It was wonderful watching her start to interact with the people of the town she adopted on more than an employee/employer level as the book progressed.

A quick cozy if you need something to break up all the heavy reading. Or if you just love the cozies.

I give it a four - I liked it!

A Couple of Reviews

Well, not really reviews - you know how I do this. Here's what I thought of the following books:

Xone of Contention by Piers Anthony - This was my foray into Science Fiction to try and get an 'X' book for my A to Z reading challenge. It didn't work out so well. As a matter of fact, I had to change my rating system to include a 'Didn't Finish' category. I tried, I really did - but after slogging my way through the first two chapters I had to quit. I'm still on the look out for any books titled 'X' if anyone has any suggestions at all!

So, this book gets a 1 - Did not finish

The Kingdom Keepers (Disney After Dark) - OK, I loved this book. I read it in about three days - it would have been less, but I was monitoring end of year testing at Zach's school - so for four hours a day I was there. I love Disney and we've been to DisneyWorld several times, so it was fun knowing what they were talking about. Also, the added excitement of knowing that maybe, just maybe, those animatronic people are real! I know I've always thought that they hang out in the parks after dark, ever since my first trip to DisneyLand! Anyway, I thought it was great and I highly recommend it. It's a YA book - but it's still entertaining enough even for this 43 year old.

I'm giving this book my first new 5 - I loved it!

Obviously I can't follow my rule about using the drop box to return books. But in my defense I couldn't drop the audiobook in the drop box - so I had to go it - and check out books!

I did control myself though - I only walked out with two!

I was in the mood for some Hannah!

I picked up another audiobook

PBS Books

I wanted to share the books I got from PaperBack Swap last week. Only two - because I'm more careful about making sure that they can't be found in my library!

I'm a sucker for books with history in them. Or based on some fragment of history. I love Russian the best but my second favorite is Egyptian, so I had to get this. I'm learning that a lot of the libraries around here don't offer many books like this. It went straight on my shelf - right now I have a ton of library books to read!

I picked this one because I read another book by the author that I liked. This is the first one in that series - another that my library (or any in the consortium) didn't have. Weird. Does that mean it's suckish? Why have some in a series and not others? Hmm good questions for the librarians.

See, I was good! Well, actually I was bad because I hit Borders and well, that would be such a long post! I also got one from Amazon. I need to start school again ASAP I never had time to browse books when I was in class!

Learn why it really can be an endless summer-for immortals.

photo and synopsis courtesy of goodreads

My thoughts - This book contained thirteen stories from various authors, most of whom I'd never heard of until I picked up this book. Honestly, it was the cover that drew me as I was wandering through the library. I enjoyed most of the stories, and thankfully, the weren't all about vampires! There was a great selection of other 'not of this world' characters and that's what I liked most about it.

The two stories I enjoyed the most were One for the Money by Jeaniene Frost and Pirate Dave's Haunted Amusement Park by Toni L.P. Kelner. Turns out the characters I fell in love with in Jeaniene Frost's offering are from, yes a series. That's always the way. I'll have to check into those when I get caught up on some of my other reading.

I'm giving this book a 3 - I liked all the stories, some more than others. If you need a break from you're regular reading and you like different kinds of paranormal give it a shot!
